“My Blog’s Name in Books” Book Tag

Hi, Hey, Hello!

So I have reached a kind of stalemate with myself in that for some reason I am yet again finding it really hard to get book reviews out of my head and onto the page. And then also I got halfway through one only to discover that it didn’t save and so most of it is now gone and I am protesting against it momentarily. Also, I have a reviewed currently scheduled for a book that I am still reading and so I am also trying to bide myself some time. The Red Queen series reviews are acoming though, I’ve gone all the way in.

In the meantime I am doing another tag post because they are my break glass for emergency. I feel like this one is just going to highlight to me all the books that I have told myself I will read and yet show no signs of actually reading. Also why is my blog name so damn long? And why does it have so many bloody ‘f’s in it??

RULES:

1.  Spell out your blog’s name. (this is where you wish your blog’s name was shorter LOL)

2. Find a book from your TBR that begins with each letter. (Note you cannot ADD to your TBR to complete this challenge – the books must already be on your Goodread’s TBR)

3. Have fun!

T – Throne of Glass, Sarah J Maas – Lucky for me this is actually on my list for this year

13519397
Throne of Glass

H – Hunger, Roxane Gay – Also handy, because this is also on the list

22813605

E – Everless, Sara Holland – Also on my list for this year

37883497
Everless

G – Grief is the Thing With Feathers, Max Porter – I forgot this was even on the list, I thought I was gonna struggle with this letter, turns out that is not the case

25334576
Grief is The Thing With Feathers

I – Inkheart, Cornelia Funke – I think I started reading this book when I was in school, but clearly do not remember and so it seems like a safe bet to have this be on a to read list.

Inkheart (Inkworld, #1)
Inkheart

R – Renegades, Marissa Meyer – I need to finish The Lunar Chronicles first, but I liked her style of writing and so I feel like I might like this one too.

28421168
Renegdes

A – Ash Princess, Laura Sebastian – I am currently reading the Red Queen series, as I mentioned above, and all of the covers have a crown and some blood dripping down it, I’ve lived with nothing but this image all month, I am clearly having a moment with fancy crowns on book covers.

Ash Princess
Ash Princess

F – Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk – This is also on my list for this year, so that’s handy

Fight Club
Fight Club

F – Fever Pitch, Nick Hornby – Who knows when I put this on my to read list, I read one book by Hornby once and apparently thought I was going to make it a thing I guess…?

4264
Fever Pitch

E – Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, Gail Honeyman – This is for sure on my list because it is literally everywhere whenever I go into a Waterstones and the power of suggestion is real.

35274766
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fineela

F – False Hearts, Laura Lam – I had no idea this was on the list, my interest has just been been piqued again.

22816079
False Hearts

I – If I Stay, Gayle Forman – For some reason I thought I had already read this, but given that it is still on this list I’m guessing I haven’t

4374400
If I Stay

L – Life After Life, Kate Atkinson – I don’t think I have read anything by Atkinson, but there are a lot of books by her on my list. This being one of them.

15790842
Life After Life

E – Exit Here, Jason Myers – I have no idea what this book is about or how it got here. But here it is.

1240370
Exit Here

S – Someday, Someday, Maybe, Lauren Graham – I actually remember putting this book on my list because it’s written by Lauren Graham and I love her.

16071745
Someday, Someday, Maybe

And that’s another book tag done.

Parentheses count: 0. See you tomorrow, what with I don’t know, but I should be here…!

The Goodreads Book Tag

Hi, Hey, Hello!

Oh what a surprise, another book tag. This one I saw on Liam’s blog yesterday and well I didn’t have a plan for today and so here we are.

What was the last book you marked as ‘read’?

I’m writing this on Thursday and on a day when I am nearing the end of a book, but as it has not yet been finished I can’t quite say that it’s been marked as read, so in that case the answer is The Girl of Ink and Stars and I attempted to make sense of my thoughts on it here.

What are you currently reading?

The book that I am almost finished is All That She Can See. The review is coming, I am just as confused as I was with the last book I read.

What book do you plan to read next?

Currently I’m thinking Postcards From the Edge. Or it might be Eat, Pray, Love. I have 3 books left on this post to read and am currently looking mostly on track to succeed with that. It’s most likely to be Postcards just because of the length and the fact that I can probably get it done in a couple of days (hopefully)

Do you use the star rating system?

I do, just to give myself a general idea of where I stand with it when I come to actually writing up the reviews

Are you doing a 2018 Reading Challenge?

I am, it’s set at 65 currently, but as I mentioned here I’m kind of going for 70.

Do you have a wishlist?

No.

What book do you plan to buy next?

I’m trying to minimize the amount of books I buy right now. I did just buy two at the weekend (for a fiver in the end, which is kind of why I did it. I had an itch to scratch and I managed to do that and save £11 in the process which made it feel a little better) and so am trying to not buy anymore. There’s some pre-orders I have but I don’t really remember but I imagine I will get a dispatch email letting me know that I have a new one on the way I just don’t know when that will be.

Do you have any favorite quotes? Share a few.

I have so many. None that are saved on Goodreads or anything because I forget that is a feature on there.

But I’m only going to put one here from one of my always recommend books, The Night Circus (because it is just one the most stunningly written books that I have ever read)

‘You may tell a tale that takes up residence in someone’s soul, becomes their blood and self and purpose. That tale will move them and drive them and who knows that they might do because of it, because of your words. That is your role, your gift.’

Who are your favorite authors?

I have a lot. Obviously, Neil Gaiman. Donna Tartt. Samantha Shannon and Alwyn Hamilton are up there. Erin Morgenstern (yes, on the back off one book alone). I’m loving Kiersten White and her world building. Carrie Fisher has a brilliant way with words. I actually not necessarily hate Hemingway. Like I said there are a lot, I could go on.

Have you joined any groups?

I don’t think so (also didn’t bother to check whether I had). I don’t really utilize the site the way that I can to be honest. I just track my books with it.

The 90s Kids Book Tag

Hi, Hey, Hello!

You know how much I love me a tag post, especially when they also involve books and this one is based on the 90s. I was born in the 90s and was 7 when it ended so you know I was kind of a 90s kid.

Oh, I came across this on Tabby’s blog.

THE RULES

  1. Please, please, please steal this tag and spread it around! I only ask that you link it back to The Literary Phoenix so that I can see everyone’s answers!
  2. Freeze tag was all the rage in the 90s. Tag someone (or many) you think would have fun with this!
  3. Have fun!

POKEMON

A GBA GAME AND TRADING CARD GAME WHERE YOU BATTLED POCKET MONSTERS AND STRIVED TO CATCH THEM ALL. BACK IN THE DAY, THERE WERE ONLY 150 POKEMON.

THE AUTHOR YOU NEED EVERY BOOK FROM.

Neil. Gaiman. I’m making kind of good progress with this to be fair, but there are still so many books.

AIM

AOL INSTANT MESSAGING – HOW 90S KIDS COMMUNICATED WITH THEIR FRIENDS AFTER SCHOOL BEFORE EVERYONE HAD A CELL PHONE.

BOOK THAT CONNECTED YOU WITH YOUR BEST FRIEND.

Will this come as a surprise if I tell you that it’s Harry Potter. There’s a whole story about that.

FURBY

CREEPY NEEDY ROBOTS YOU COULD TEACH TO TALK AND WERE PROBABLY DEMON POSSESSED. SOMEHOW THESE MADE A COMEBACK?

BOOK THAT SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA BUT WAS ACTUALLY A MONSTER.

There are so many though.

N’SYNC

90S QUINTESSENTIAL BOY BAND. YOU MAY HAVE HEARD OF JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE?

A BOOK YOU HATED TO SAY BYE, BYE, BYE TO.

There are so many books. Most recently it’s the Rebel of the Sands trilogy. I am so excited that I still have some short stories from this world left to read so I haven’t said goodbye to it completely.

SLIMED!

GETTING GREEN SLIME THROWN ON YOU, COURTESY OF THE SHOW FIGURE IT OUT. ALSO APPARENTLY STILL A THING AT THE KID’S CHOICE AWARDS?

A BOOK EVERYONE LOVED BUT YOU HATED.

Like the whole of The Mortal Instruments… I mean I read it but I hated it pretty much the entire time. I do not understand the hype.

OREGON TRAIL

90S COMPUTER GAME YOU COULD USUALLY PLAY AT SCHOOL, WHICH WAS GREAT. IT TAUGHT US PEOPLE USED TO DIE A LOT OF GRUESOME, MESSY DEATHS.

A BOOK THAT MADE YOU WISH YOU DIED OF DYSENTERY.

Such drama. I don’t hate any book that much.

MIXTAPE/CD

BACK BEFORE EVERYONE HAD MUSIC ON THEIR PHONES (REMEMBER, WE DIDN’T HAVE CELL PHONES!) FOLKS WOULD RIP THEIR CDS AND MAKE MIXES FOR EACH OTHER.

3 BOOKS YOU RECOMMEND TO ANYONE, ANYWHERE, NO MATTER WHAT.

I did a whole damn post about the books that I will always recommend, so here are the usual suspects, The Night CircusThe Secret History, American Gods.

DIAL-UP INTERNET

YOU KNOW HOW IT’S ANNOYING WHEN YOU AREN’T ON LTE? IMAGINE WAITING 10 MINUTES FOR THE INTERNET TO START AND ANOTHER 20 MINUTES FOR GOOGLE TO LOAD!

A BOOK THAT TOOK FOR FREAKING EVER TO READ.

I’ve been trying to read Moby Dick from start to finish since 2014. So there you go.

KENAN THOMPSON

HE’S THAT GUY WHO’S BEEN ON SNL FOREVER. ALSO MIGHTY DUCKS. GOOD BURGER. KEENAN AND KEL. ALL THAT. EVERYTHING.

THAT BOOK YOU SEE REFERENCED EVERYWHERE AND IS IN EVERYTHING, BUT THAT’S OKAY BECAUSE IT’S AWESOME.

Harry Potter. Of course.

THUMBS UP, SEVEN UP

A GAME WHERE MOST THE CLASS CLOSED THEIR EYES AND SEVEN PEOPLE TAPPED SOMEONE’S THUMB AND YOU HAD TO GUESS WHO DID IT WITHOUT PEEKING.

BOOK WHERE YOU PEEKED JUST REAL QUICK AT THE ENDING BECAUSE YOU DON’T LIKE GUESSING GAMES.

Oh, I don’t do this. I like the guessing game. What’s the point.

DUNKAROOS

THESE WERE BASICALLY JUST TEDDY GRAHAMS DIPPED IN FROSTING, WHICH IS STILL A WONDERFUL SNACK IDEA.

YOUR IDEAL BOOKISH SNACK

I don’t tend to eat when I read because I do it when I’m on trains for the most part and that’s not when I also eat.

SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK

COLLECTIONS OF SHORT STORIES THAT WOULD SCARE ANY SENSIBLE KID! PLUS, THERE WERE ILLUSTRATIONS…

A BOOK THAT KEPT YOU UP ALL NIGHT.

There are none.

BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY

BASICALLY THE COOLEST THING YOU GOT TO DO IN SCIENCE CLASS WAS WATCH BILL NYE. HE HAS A NETFLIX SHOW AGAIN!

A BOOK THAT TAUGHT YOU SOMETHING NEW.

It’s not so much that they’ve taught me anything new or anything, but there are definitely some things that I’ve been reminded me about some things, like Big Magic. However I do feel like I might learn some things from a lot of the non-fiction books that I have slated to read this year and upcoming in the next few weeks.

And that’s yet another book tag done on this here blog. There’s another book review coming tomorrow because I’m still just moving through these books at quite a pace. Also, I have like 4 books to read over the next few weeks of February that I had listed earlier in the year.

Parentheses count: 0. See you tomorrow!

Reading Resolutions Tag

Hi, Hey, Hello!

Part of me feels like it is going against the grain to do something with the word resolutions in the title when we are now finally out of the first month of the year, but here we are, it’s a tag post. I like books. I like reading. This is where we are.

Welcome to February.

(Oh also, I saw this post over here)

1. An author you’d like to read (that you’ve never read before).

Alwyn Hamilton was one, but I’m reading her books now. Victoria Aveyard’s is also someone’s books that I’m excited to read. And just because of the continual hype Sarah J Maas.

2. A book you’d like to read.

Ummmmm, every book on my reading list this year.

3. A classic you’d like to read.

Sense and Sensibility Jane Austen is (I think) the only classic I have scheduled to read this year.

4. A book you’d like to re-read.

I am not big on re-reading just because I always start thinking about the new books I could be reading, but there is a part of me that is really itching to re-read both Pride and Prejudice and also Philosopher’s Stone.

5. A book you’ve had for ages and want to read.

Again, there are so many. I’m slowly making my way through them. I actually cannot remember when most of my books actually entered my life and therefore I cannot provide an accurate answer.

6. A big book you’d like to read.

IT, Stephen King. It stresses me out how big it is whenever I see it on a bookshelf.

7. An author you’ve previously read and want to read more of.

I will not rest until I have read all of Neil Gaiman’s bibliography.

8. A book you got for Christmas and would like to read.

I didn’t get any books for Christmas that I didn’t buy myself. I guess the ones that I got closest to that period of time would be The Belles which has just entered my life and I am excited to get to it later this year.

9. A series you want to read from start to finish.

I am currently doing that with Rebel in the Sands but also The Red Queen series.

10. A series you want to finish that you’ve already started.

Almost all of them. I have started so many series’ in my time. The Lunar Chronicles is the one that comes to mind the quickest. It’s been over 2 years since I read the first one.

11. Do you set reading goals? If so, how many books do you want to read in 2018?

I do set reading goals. Or at least I have started doing so over the past couple of years just because it helps to focus me a little bit more in terms of reading and not getting overwhelmed by choices.

12. Any other reading goals?

Not really. I mean read more things outside of fiction, which I can actually achieve this year as there are a lot of non-fiction books on my list which is the most I’ve read in a while.

The #NotAll Book Tag

Hi, Hey, Hello!

And I am back at with a book tag because I am a sucker for them. This was one came from Liam’s Library and it felt kind of different and an interesting take on one of these and so here it is.

#NOTALL COVER CHANGES – A COVER CHANGE YOU LIKED

I am generally speaking, not a huge fan of them. Especially if it’s gonna come at me mid series, however having said that I do like the new The Bone Season covers. They aren’t however the editions that have entered my collection, but I’ve seen them in the flesh and they are stunning and really in keeping with the vibe of the series as a whole (let’s ignore the fact that I was so dedicated to the old designs that I bought 1 and 2 in hardcover because my editions were paperback…)

#NOTALL ADAPTATIONS – AN ADAPTATION YOU LOVE MORE THAN THE BOOK

I don’t think I have one…? Actually, maybe The Princess Diaries, it just took out the whole part where it was written in diary format which I don’t always get along with so much as a reader. See also Bridget Jones’ Diary.

#NOTALL TROPES – A TROPE YOU’LL NEVER TIRE OF SEEING

On the one hand I kind of hate it, on the other hand it’s best friends falling in love. Orrrr forbidden love. In whatever guise.

#NOTALL INSTALOVE – YOU INSTALOVED THIS INSTACOUPLE

No, I pretty much hate this across the board, there is not a single couple I can think of that I like that fell in love within about a nanosecond of meeting each other.

#NOTALL LOVE TRIANGLES – AN EXAMPLE OF LOVE TRIANGLE DONE WELL

Have I ever seen one of these…? I honestly cannot remember. Or think of one. It’s hard to do and I don’t think I’ve experienced it…

#NOTALL PARENTS – BOOKISH PARENTS THAT, YOU KNOW, PARENT!

Do parents even exist in literature? The Weasleys do some parenting I think, Molly does some pretty epic things for her kids in the end. Oh wait, the parents in When Dimple Met Rishi are pretty great and they are actually some fully fledged parental relationships that are established, especially for Dimple.

#NOTALL VILLAINS – A VILLAIN YOU LOVE

The Rabbit from Alice is actually a pretty solid villain. I had my issues with that book, but in terms of early characterisation of the character I loved him. It just kind of all went downhill once The Rabbit actually entered the story, which I know makes him a weird villain to love, but some part me just does.

#NOTALL CHOSEN ONES – A CHOSEN ONE YOU CAN GET BEHIND

I’m not gonna say it, but you know which one I’m thinking of. Instead I am going to say Scarlett from Caraval who is a chosen one of sorts. But I loved her and the way that she moved through the whole story.

#NOTALL HYPED BOOKS – A BOOK THAT LIVED UP TO THE ACCLAIM

All My Friends are Superheroes was prettily heavily recommended by some people and I was a little skeptical, but I turned out to like it in the end.

#NOTALL *INSERT FAVOURITE GENRE* – A BOOK YOU’RE NOT KEEN ON FROM YOUR FAVOURITE GENRE

Okay, here’s the thing, I don’t have a favourite genre per se. I will for the most part read almost anything. So, I’m going to go with the one that I seem to return to the most is YA and I have to say that I think Looking for Alaska is a book that I don’t actually think I enjoyed in hindsight but did at the time. More recently it was Holding up the Universe.

#NOTALL *INSERT LEAST FAVOURITE GENRE* – A BOOK YOU LIKED FROM A GENRE YOU DON’T OFTEN READ

As above, I don’t really have a favourite, and I don’t really have a least favourite either. But the book that, maybe rather predictably, got me hooked on crime fiction and the like is Gone Girl which I loved.

And that’s another book tag done, as usual I am too lazy to tag others, so if you wanna do it then give it a whirl.

Parentheses count: 1. See you tomorrow!

Christmas Songs Book Tag

Hi, Hey, Hello!

Yeah, I’m very aware that I kind of just went ghost for the last few days but life exhausted me and so I just took a step back and tried to regroup and I also hit another wall when it came to writing yet another book review so I just decided to stop trying to write it and look at it later.

I’m still not looking at it today, I was going to and then I got tagged in this post and so here we are. With yet another tag post, that I am pretty sure I’ve never done, but honestly cannot remember and didn’t check. Even if I have I guarantee the answers are different now.

1. “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch”

Name a villainous character you couldn’t help but love.

Is Malfoy supposed to be a villain? Because I am kinda part of his defence squad (within reason).

2. “All I Want for Christmas is You”

Which book to you most hope to see under your Christmas tree?

For reasons, the main one being that I am running out of places to put books in my house, I have not so much as hinted at any books that I may want, so there most likely won’t be any. Also I can’t even think of a single book that I actually want at the moment.

3. “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”

Name a character that overcomes major obstacles and learns to believe in themselves.

Spent a while thinking baout this one but 100% Lou from Me Before You – She completely starts to believe in her ablities as a person by the end of the book.

4. “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”

a) Which character do you think would be on the top of the naughty list?

Ummmmmm, I just watched the Ready Player One trailer and so it has put this guy back at the forefront of my mind, Sorrento.

b) Which character do you think would be at the top of the nice list?

Hermione Granger. For no reason other than the fact that I love her and she is my literary everything.

5. “Frosty the Snowman”

Which book just melts your heart.

Real talk, I am pretty much the Ice Queen, it takes a lot to make me feel things when it comes to literature. I honestly cannot think of a single book that melts my heart in anyway…is that bad? I’m racking my brain and coming up short.

6. “Feliz Navidad”

Choose a book that takes place in a country other than your own.

Almost every book I read…seriously there aren’t that many books that I read that are set in London (more specifically the UK, I guess, but I live in a London bubble).

7. “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”

Which holiday themed book do you use to spread the Christmas joy?

I think I have read one holiday themed book and it was My True Love Gave to Me. So that I guess, because it’s all I have.

8. “Sleigh Ride”

Which fictional character would you choose to spend the holidays with (doesn’t have to be a love interest!)

Ron Weasley. Although I say that tentatively actually, because I’ve just remembered that that family is fucking huge and I do not come from a large family. I don’t know if I could do that…

9. “Baby it’s Cold Outside”

Which book that you didn’t like would you sacrifice to a fire to warm yourself up in the cold?

Moby Dick. Have I even finished that book yet? No, I have not. I will do it one day, but the half that I have read I cannot stand. I mean seriously. It’s also quite long, it would burn for a while too.

10. “Do you hear what I hear”

Which book do you think everyone should read?

We all know where this going right…The Night CircusAmerican Gods or The Book Thief. There, I’ve given you options.

One day I will do a book tag post that doesn’t mention a lot of the usual suspects. I don’t know when that will be, but it will happen…

Parentheses count: 2. See you tomorrow!

Would You Rather – Christmas Edition

Hi, Hey, Hello!

I’m throwing all caution to the wind now and am just talking about all kinds of festive things.

Today it’s all about would you rather

Would you rather…

Not celebrate Christmas next year? Or not celebrate your birthday next year?
I’m turning 25 next year and I kind of don’t care, which I never really do anyway, I mean it’s gonna be a Monday, I hate being the centre of attention and I can eat cake whenever. All this to say that I wouldn’t want to miss out on living my life in tinsel and putting fairy lights over everything and eating all the fooooodddd. Mini sausages wrapped in bacon? Sign me up.

Never receive another gift from anyone ever again? Or be forced to give everyone in your family an inappropriate gift?

Looks like everyone is getting inappropriate gifts.

Grow a permanent Santa beard? Or Grow permanent reindeer antlers?
Basic bitch me up and give me some reindeer antlers. I’ll find a flower crown to really style it out.

Celebrate Christmas every day of the year? Or never celebrate Christmas ever again?
Oh never again. I get annoyed when Christmas effectively starts in October and then by the time it actually comes around I’m kind of ready for it to be done. If it lasted all year I’d just make like The Grinch and go live in a cave.

Get the presents you wanted for Christmas? Or get $100,000 for Christmas?
Show me the money.

Would you rather be married to Santa Clause or Jack Frost?
Santa, I guess? I dunno…

Never listen to Christmas music ever again? Listen to music every day of your life?
Never again. Like I said before, there is only so much I can take. Some of those Christmas songs are very in your face, not to be trifled with all the time.

Would you rather have to sit on Santa’s lap for an hour in a mall? Or find a mouse in your Christmas stocking every year during the 12 days of Christmas?
Mice. Surely if I know it’s there then dealing with it becomes a piece of piss?

Drink a barrel of eggnog? Drink a barrel of ginger beer?
…Neither…

Become an elf? Or become a reindeer?
Elf. Seems like a more manageable work load.

Only listen to soca/reggae version of Christmas songs? Or only listen Japanese version of Christmas songs?
Give me a reggae version of White Christmas… (I could have had any song there, that was apparently just the first one that came to mind).

Would you rather spend Christmas alone? Or with strangers?
Alone.

And that’s yet another Christmas tag done. I’m gonna try and not do another one of these tomorrow, but who knows whether I will actually be successful in that or not. I sure as hell don’t.
