Christmas Songs Book Tag

Hi, Hey, Hello!

Yeah, I’m very aware that I kind of just went ghost for the last few days but life exhausted me and so I just took a step back and tried to regroup and I also hit another wall when it came to writing yet another book review so I just decided to stop trying to write it and look at it later.

I’m still not looking at it today, I was going to and then I got tagged in this post and so here we are. With yet another tag post, that I am pretty sure I’ve never done, but honestly cannot remember and didn’t check. Even if I have I guarantee the answers are different now.

1. “You’re a Mean One Mr. Grinch”

Name a villainous character you couldn’t help but love.

Is Malfoy supposed to be a villain? Because I am kinda part of his defence squad (within reason).

2. “All I Want for Christmas is You”

Which book to you most hope to see under your Christmas tree?

For reasons, the main one being that I am running out of places to put books in my house, I have not so much as hinted at any books that I may want, so there most likely won’t be any. Also I can’t even think of a single book that I actually want at the moment.

3. “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”

Name a character that overcomes major obstacles and learns to believe in themselves.

Spent a while thinking baout this one but 100% Lou from Me Before You – She completely starts to believe in her ablities as a person by the end of the book.

4. “Santa Claus is Coming to Town”

a) Which character do you think would be on the top of the naughty list?

Ummmmmm, I just watched the Ready Player One trailer and so it has put this guy back at the forefront of my mind, Sorrento.

b) Which character do you think would be at the top of the nice list?

Hermione Granger. For no reason other than the fact that I love her and she is my literary everything.

5. “Frosty the Snowman”

Which book just melts your heart.

Real talk, I am pretty much the Ice Queen, it takes a lot to make me feel things when it comes to literature. I honestly cannot think of a single book that melts my heart in anyway…is that bad? I’m racking my brain and coming up short.

6. “Feliz Navidad”

Choose a book that takes place in a country other than your own.

Almost every book I read…seriously there aren’t that many books that I read that are set in London (more specifically the UK, I guess, but I live in a London bubble).

7. “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year”

Which holiday themed book do you use to spread the Christmas joy?

I think I have read one holiday themed book and it was My True Love Gave to Me. So that I guess, because it’s all I have.

8. “Sleigh Ride”

Which fictional character would you choose to spend the holidays with (doesn’t have to be a love interest!)

Ron Weasley. Although I say that tentatively actually, because I’ve just remembered that that family is fucking huge and I do not come from a large family. I don’t know if I could do that…

9. “Baby it’s Cold Outside”

Which book that you didn’t like would you sacrifice to a fire to warm yourself up in the cold?

Moby Dick. Have I even finished that book yet? No, I have not. I will do it one day, but the half that I have read I cannot stand. I mean seriously. It’s also quite long, it would burn for a while too.

10. “Do you hear what I hear”

Which book do you think everyone should read?

We all know where this going right…The Night CircusAmerican Gods or The Book Thief. There, I’ve given you options.

One day I will do a book tag post that doesn’t mention a lot of the usual suspects. I don’t know when that will be, but it will happen…

Would You Rather – Christmas Edition

Hi, Hey, Hello!

I’m throwing all caution to the wind now and am just talking about all kinds of festive things.

Today it’s all about would you rather

Would you rather…

Not celebrate Christmas next year? Or not celebrate your birthday next year?
I’m turning 25 next year and I kind of don’t care, which I never really do anyway, I mean it’s gonna be a Monday, I hate being the centre of attention and I can eat cake whenever. All this to say that I wouldn’t want to miss out on living my life in tinsel and putting fairy lights over everything and eating all the fooooodddd. Mini sausages wrapped in bacon? Sign me up.

Never receive another gift from anyone ever again? Or be forced to give everyone in your family an inappropriate gift?

Looks like everyone is getting inappropriate gifts.

Grow a permanent Santa beard? Or Grow permanent reindeer antlers?
Basic bitch me up and give me some reindeer antlers. I’ll find a flower crown to really style it out.

Celebrate Christmas every day of the year? Or never celebrate Christmas ever again?
Oh never again. I get annoyed when Christmas effectively starts in October and then by the time it actually comes around I’m kind of ready for it to be done. If it lasted all year I’d just make like The Grinch and go live in a cave.

Get the presents you wanted for Christmas? Or get $100,000 for Christmas?
Show me the money.

Would you rather be married to Santa Clause or Jack Frost?
Santa, I guess? I dunno…

Never listen to Christmas music ever again? Listen to music every day of your life?
Never again. Like I said before, there is only so much I can take. Some of those Christmas songs are very in your face, not to be trifled with all the time.

Would you rather have to sit on Santa’s lap for an hour in a mall? Or find a mouse in your Christmas stocking every year during the 12 days of Christmas?
Mice. Surely if I know it’s there then dealing with it becomes a piece of piss?

Drink a barrel of eggnog? Drink a barrel of ginger beer?

Become an elf? Or become a reindeer?
Elf. Seems like a more manageable work load.

Only listen to soca/reggae version of Christmas songs? Or only listen Japanese version of Christmas songs?
Give me a reggae version of White Christmas… (I could have had any song there, that was apparently just the first one that came to mind).

Would you rather spend Christmas alone? Or with strangers?

And that’s yet another Christmas tag done. I’m gonna try and not do another one of these tomorrow, but who knows whether I will actually be successful in that or not. I sure as hell don’t.

The Joy of Christmas Tag

Hi, Hey, Hello!

What up, coming at you with another tag post, and am slowly trickling Christmassy based posts onto this blog. I’ve been feeling weirdly un-Scrooge like this year. Maybe because I just need some festive fun in my life while it all just gets super stressful outside of that. But anyway, back the point, I’m feeling festive, it’s December, this is kind of a version of Blogmas. I saw this over here and now here we are.

I should just say, I’m just talking about books in general. The books I have to read this month are set in stone. I’m just getting excited about all the possibilities that will open up to me once I’ve wrapped this challenge up.

Done rambling, let’s get on with it.

1) Anticipation: The Christmas excitement is real, what book release(s) are you most anticipating?

Ummmmm…I don’t know…I guess The Curses, Laure Eve. Which isn’t happening until around late summer next year I think. I’ve tried to stop thinking about pre-orders because I have a serious problem with them and I’ve bought so many this year that I really shouldn’t have. This one is currently on pre-order, and I’m sure I’ll find loads more to add to the list soon. But for now, it’s that.

2) Christmas Songs & Carols: What book or author can you not help but sing it’s praises?

JK Rowling, obviously. And then also Neil Gaiman, let’s be real I could wax on about American Gods and Neverwhere for actual days.

3) Gingerbread Houses: What book or series has wonderful world building?

The Bone Season, Samantha Shannon has such great world building. It’s drip fed in slowly so it never feels like you’re finding out all this information at once.

4) A Christmas Carol: Favourite classic or one that you want to read

Pride and Prejudice, I’m a cliche what can I say. I want to read some Dickens though. I won’t start with A Christmas Carol, but maybe I’ll end with it…

5) Christmas Sweets: What book would you love to receive for Christmas

There are so many. Maybe the Rebel of the Sands trilogy. Or rather more accurately, the first two before the final one comes out early next year.

6) Candles in the Window: What book gives you that warm fuzzy feeling

The Night Circus, what a surprise that this has come up…the parts that are second person narrative and snapshots into parts of the circus that you’ve usually just read being created. It makes you feel like you’re there. And I love it.

7) Christmas Trees & Decorations: What are some of your favourite book covers?

I am a sucker for a pretty cover. My edition of The Red Queen is a thing of beauty. Then there are so many others. Caraval arrived into my life this week and it’s a beauty.

8) Christmas Joy: What are some of your favourite things about Christmas And/Or some of your favourite Christmas memories?

I am in charge of making the house look all festive, and so that’s my thing. I think the decorations and tree is coming down this week and so that’s where we’re at with that. The process of finding places to put the decorations and sticking tinsel everywhere is pretty therapeutic. And also a sure fire to way to festive.

And there we have it!

Coffee Book Tag

Hi, Hey, Hello!

I’m gonna level with you, I broke glass for emergency tag post today because it was supposed to be a review. But I could not find the words for it yesterday when I was trying to write it so I pushed it back and then when I got home from work today I still couldn’t do it. So I pushed it back again and then panicked, because I had nothing else.

But good old reliable YouTube black holes provided and so I ended up with this because YouTube always provides and my recommended videos are a strange place to be and it combines two of my favourite things in books and coffee.

1. Black: Name a series that’s tough to get into but has hardcore fans.

I’m kind of scared to involved in anything to do with Sarah J Maas. I randomly have book 5 from the Throne of Glass series (it was signed, I have a problem, I know) but I’m scared to actually start it. Those fans be passionate.

2. Peppermint mocha: Name a book that gets more popular during the winter or a festive time of year.

I mean  My True Love Gave to Me is just pure festive. It’s full of warm fuzzy Christmas feelings and it’s delightful. However my Christmas time reading will be all Hamilton related, because yes, that is how I plan on finishing out this reading year.

3. Hot chocolate: What is your favourite children’s book?

Double Act. I’ve said this so many times before

4. Double shot of espresso: Name a book that kept you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train

5. Starbucks: Name a book you see everywhere.

At the moment nothing. But at one point I saw Cassandra Clare a lot on my commute into work, and I was one of those people for a large chunk of this year.

6. That hipster coffee shop: Give a book by an indie author a shoutout

I feel bad in that I don’t read much from indie authors…but I feel like people need to talk about Jessie Burton more. The Muse was nothing short of pure genius wrapped in stunning writing.

7. Oops! I accidentally got decaf: Name a book you were expecting more from.

I have so many and yet initially I could not think of a single one. Our Chemical Hearts was the first one that eventually came to mind. It just didn’t do it for me.

8. The perfect blend: Name a book or series that was both bitter sweet but ultimately satisfying.

Oh look, here we are. Turns out I can’t go a book post without bringing this up. It’s Harry Potter…

And there we have my emergency book tag post done.

Give it a shot if you like, I would love to read them.

How I Choose My Books Tag

Hi, Hey, Hello!

I am taking a break from the book reviews today just as a bit of relief and because we all know that I love me a tag post. I saw this one on Orange Owl Diaries alllll the way back in September and instantly knew that I had to just file it away for some day this month. Today is the day.

Real talk, I don’t own a bookshelf, I chose a lot of these books by memory and from the ones that I could see because they’ve not been fully put away somewhere. So, without further ado:

Freedom, Jonathan Franzen. The books that are on my reading list for the rest of year are in plain sight so that I can just pick the next one up when I move onto it. And therefore this is the only one that I have just lying around.

I will be honest, I didn’t think I would like Brideshead Revisited. It felt like it was going to be one of those books that you ‘should’ read because it’s considered a classic and well I’m an English Lit grad and to not have read some classics is almost a crime. So I read it, and I was surprised at how quickly I read it and how much I enjoyed it. This surprise also came from the fact that I tried to watch the adaptation of it and got bored very quickly, which was weird because it had Ben Whishaw, Matthew Goode and Hayley Atwell in it. All people that I love usually. Maybe I need to give it another shot now that I’m older and have a better understanding of the text.

The first book I can think of (told you doing this from memory) is The Red Queen. This book was on my radar in the peripheral of my brain because I had seen it on some book blogs over the last couple of years and it’s on my TBR, but the reason it came to mind is because I have a special edition of this book. I was called to this book because of the special edition. It was just sitting pretty and I couldn’t help myself, before I knew it I had picked it up and was buying it. Then I read the first page and knew it would be my kind of thing, when I finally got around to reading. Whenever that may be.

Someone recommended Station Eleven to me and I am honestly so thankful that they did. It’s not necessarily from a genre that I read very often just because it’s so easy for dystopian novels to be done badly or in way that just feels like it’s been done before, so I tend to work only on recommendations for that genre for that reason. I loved this book.

I’m pretty sure Rainbow Rowell came onto my radar because I kept seeing people talking about Fangirl on Tumblr. And well, that book is my jammmm. If I didn’t have so many new books to read and worlds to discover I would so reread that book. Although having said that, you give me a solid day where I don’t have anything to do I could probably devour it again.

Godsgrave. It’s the sequel to Nevernight which is one of my favourite books that I have read this year and it’s been mocking me ever since it entered my world in early September because there are other books that I have to read first and also I don’t wanna read it because once I do then I will have to wait until the last book and I want to prolong that happening for as long as possible and in the meantime I will just stare longingly at the gilded black pages.

Uhhhhhh, Big Little Lies I guess. I was kind of aware of the book because it cropped on my Instagram a couple of times and I filed it away on my mental TBR list, but then I watched the TV adaptation and was gripped by it and so in love with the complex story telling and the many layers to these female characters that I knew I had to read the book just to truly get all those nuances and see how the world was built on paper.

One of my all time faves is The Night Circus (surprise, surprise). I read it a couple of years ago now and again I read it because it kept cropping up on Tumblr and kept seeing how it was full of beautiful imagery and was the slowest of burns plot wise and well I’m a sucker for that kind of writing. I was not disappointed. I also read The Secret History a couple of years ago and I picked that up because it was recommended to me by a friend at uni and she had such glowing things to say about, including again that the style of writing was just so beautiful. I’m a sucker for beautiful passages of writing and images that can haunt you for days what can I say?

And that is a little insight into more of my books, whilst also mentioning the same books that I almost always mention. I should really do a full overhaul of my books and truly chronicle what I have…which means what I really need is a bloody bookshelf…

Get To Know Me, My Life

Cocktails and Dreams Tag

Hi, Hey, Hello!

I am very much a break glass for emergency tag kind of girl. One because I find them to be a fun way to shake off the cobwebs should I ever find myself falling into some kind of rut and two because they are kind of a fun way to get know a bit more about in a fairly random way.

Which I think this one will prove. I fell into some kind of blog vortex on Sunday night after I searched for something and that led me to this post and well, I love me a cocktail so this seemed kind of perfect for me and now here it is:

Martini: means business! If you could have any job what would it be?

I had this weird dream the other day that I was a model, which in a fully conscious state I do not think I actually want to be so I don’t know what my sub-conscious was on about there. In my non dream life I want to work with words. And books. Be that in publishing or as an actual writer. I just want to work in something that feels creative in some way. And with words. I did not study words and literature for 3 years intensively and loose a part of my sanity to not work with them in some way one day.

Mojito: time to let your hair down! What’s your idea of a great night out?

Cocktails, food and laughs. I haven’t been out out for over 3 years now and while on the one hand I feel like I should be doing that a little more given that I am in my mid-20s, I cannot deny that I much prefer just eating alll the food and having a few cocktails and then ya know, being at home before midnight…

Pina Colada: the famous drink or the famous karaoke song! What’s your belt-out karaoke tune?

I haven’t been to karaoke in, like, 3 years. I’m not really a fan, I have to be very drunk to even begin to think that it is a good idea. The last time I did though I sang two songs and they were What Makes You Beautiful and Mr Brightside.

Bloody Mary: the notorious hangover-curing drink. What’s your go-to hangover cure?

It’s a bacon sandwich. More specifically a Pret bacon sandwich. Which has become a slight issue because I now no longer work near a Pret and so getting through any kind of hangover on a weekday is psychologically very difficult. Now it’s just coffee, water and a lot of talking about how hungover I am.

Manhattan: a true New York drink! Which city do you dream of visiting?

California. Which isn’t a city per se. But it encompasses a few of the cities that I do want to visit. Those cities being San Diego, San Fransisco and LA. Then there is also Las Vegas, Chicago and Boston. I want to go back to New York. I feel like I should see Sydney at least once.

Then there is a lot of Europe that I want to go to. Like back to Paris, Venice, Rome, actually just a lot of Italy. Amsterdam, Prague, Madrid, Barcelona. There are other Greek islands that I want to visit.

I just want to do a lot of travelling.

Long Island Ice Tea: quite a mix of ingredients! What are your three favourite foods or drinks?

I literally only drink water on a regular basis. And coffee. And then sometimes I drink a lot of vodka tonics or a lot of cocktails (which tend to be vodka based).

And then food wise, burgers, pizza and brownies. Or any kind of dessert really, but mainly brownies.

Cosmopolitan:  made famous by Sex and the City! Tag three friends to take part in this Cocktails and Dream tag!

I am notoriously bad at actually tagging people to do these kinds of things, I’m mainly a free for all kind of gal. So if you wanna give it a shot, have at it.

Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag – The 2017 Edition

Hi, Hey, Hello!

Timehop reminded me that I did this last year, and I entertained the idea of doing this again this year and clearly I entertained it enough that here I am doing it again., plus you know me, I love talking about books…

1) Best book read in 2017

Ummmmm, I actually forgot a lot of the books that I have read this year so far (oops), but when I had a look at my Goodreads reading challenge so far I was reminded of how much I looovveeeeddd And I Darken. Which is fitting because I collected Now I Rise at the weekend and I am so excited to finally get to read it, whenever that may be.

2) Best sequel read in 2017

The Song Rising, god I loved that book so much. It was almost the best book that I’ve read this year so far but it was just pipped to the post. But yeah, best sequel I’ve read (I was about to say maybe the only sequel I’ve read, but then I remembered that I’ve read 2 whole series’ this year…)

3) New release you haven’t got yet but want to read

All That She Can See, Carrie Hope Fletcher. I’ve read the first couple of chapters and I found it interesting and also want to see how the story is going to play out.

4) Most anticipated read for the second part of the year

I have some Neil Gaiman in my future reads, which I am excited for because it’s been a while since I read a Gaiman book. But I think I might be reading my most anticipated book now in Nevernight.

5) Biggest disappointment

I think it might be Our Chemical Hearts.

6) Biggest surprise

The Graces. I mean I knew I would like it on some level because  it was fucking with witches, but I didn’t think I would love it as much as I did.

7) Favourite new author (or new to me)

Laure Eve. And Jay Kristoff I feel given my opinion of the first 100 pages of his book.

8) Fictional crush

I don’t have one. I still don’t have one. Not a book one anyway (although actually, technically I might do, but it’s based on the show not the book, so I’m not counting it).

9) Newest favourite character

Ummmm, all of the characters in The Graces…Oh and Jem Carstairs.

10) A book that made me cry

The answer to this was about to get really shady really quickly, but none. I don’t think one has even come close.

11) A book that made me happy

The Best of Adam Sharp and Wishful Drinking (although that also made me a bit sad…)

12) Most beautiful books you have bought or received this year

I just got Now I Rise and it is stunning. Oh and The Girl of Ink and Stars. Not that I am reading either of them in the near future.

13) What books do you have to read by the end of the year?

Right, there are 20 of them, buckle in, let’s go: Tales of the Peculiar, The House on Sunset Lake, The Hope Family Calendar, Fantastic Beasts Script, Hamilton: The Revolution, Alexander Hamilton, Freedom, Don Juan, Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime, The Muse, Anansi Boys, Women, Brideshead Revisited, Odd and the Frost Giants, Grimm’s Fairytales, Florence Grace, The Secret, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The View from the Cheap Seats, The Sleeper and the Spindle. And exhale.

And that is this year’s mid year book freak out done. Not gonna lie, listing all the books left to read for this year has instilled some weird kind of stress in me…ah well, I can only tackle it one book at a time.

Parentheses count: 3. See you tomorrow!
