The Playlist Book Tag

Hi, Hey, Hello!

Raise your hand if you’re surprised that I have another bookish related book tag going live today?

No hands raised? Yeah, that’s what I thought. This one combines two of my faves, books and music and I saw it here

One Direction: A book you would still love without one of the main characters

Honestly, I don’t think there are any…? I read a lot of first person narratives so I kind of only really know a lot of characters in accordance with what the narrator says/reveals about them and so I don’t really know if I would care enough independently of the narrator…

Busted: A book you didn’t expect to have a sequel

I was surprised to find out that Warm Bodies  had a sequel as that didn’t seem like something that needed to happen. I mean I’m gonna read it, but yeah, was surprised that it happened.

5 Seconds of Summer: A book that reminds you of summer

Currently the To All the Boys I Loved Before trilogy gives me those vibes, just because I devoured the books and the film made me feel all warm and fuzzy and those are the feelings of summer I feel.

Adele: A book you love or you hate

I’m currently still loving all of Adam Silvera’s work, I mean it hurts my heart, but I love them all.

Taylor Swift: A guilty pleasure book

I don’t believe in guilty pleasures, I don’t have them. I read what I read.

Green Day: A book that bored you to sleep for a whole month

Do I have to say it? Do we all know what my answer is going to be? Have I mentioned how much of a slog I’ve found it before (many times)? It’s Moby Dick (obviously)

Coldplay: A book that makes you sad no matter how many times you read it

Okay, I am not a huge fan of re-reading books and so I don’t do it (I get stressed about the fact that I am not reading something new). However, even thinking about They Both Die at The End makes me feel sad.

The Glee Cast: A book that you’d like to be made into a musical

Okay, so I’m like a musical person, in that they tend to be the only thing that I ever go and see. And so when R and I went to see Cursed Child we kind of just forgot that it wasn’t going to be a musical even though there were many opportunities for it become one. So I feel like I would want Harry Potter to be a musical in some capacity.

Ed Sheeran: A book that was more emotionally heavy than you expected it to be

History is All You Left Me and More Happy Than Not both took me on rides and felt like a sucker punch to the gut. So thanks for that Adam Silvera.

Miley Cyrus: A book that you still don’t understand

I kind of still don’t get The Girl of Ink Stars. It just felt a little anti-climatic or something. I didn’t quite understand the hype, I think that was the main thing with it.

And there we have another book related tag post down.

Parentheses count: 3. See you tomorrow!

The Gilmore Girls Book Tag

Hi, Hey, Hello!

For the sake of my sanity (and maybe yours) I am breaking the book reviews up with my faves. A book tag (that I saw on here). That I may or may have done before but I imagine the answers will be different if I have, also I could probably search to see if I have, but my head is set on this and so here it is:

Lorelei
A character with a witty or sarcastic sense of humor
But there are so many. I have so many sarcastic faves, I can’t choose just one. I won’t. I actually honestly can’t choose one, I just tried and failed…

Rory
Your favorite classic
I’m such a sucker for Pride and Prejudice.

Luke
A book you secretly love but are afraid to admit.
I have no shame about most things at this point in my life, who the fuck cares?

Lane
A musical character
I feel like the characters in my current book have that kind of vibe, although none of them are explicitly musical. I don’t know, I literally never notice if they are musical or not.

Dean
Your first book love
The first book I ever fully loved was Double Act. The first character that I ever loved with all my heart was Ron Weasley.

Sooki
A book you’ve devoured
I devoured the whole damn To All the Boys trilogy. I read all those books in about a day each, which was both amazing but all means that it’s gone now….

Jess
A book you love that gets the most hate
Looking for Alaska. I mean, I didn’t hate it really, but also I didn’t get the hype. It was just kind of meh.

Miss Patty
A book that was ruined by the hype
I saw a lot of hype around Ponti and when I read it I just…didn’t get it.

Emily Gilmore
An expensive book

As in the most that I have spent on a book? The Barnes and Nobel Complete Works of Shakespeare. It has gold gilded pages and everything. We all know how much I love a gilded edge.

Paris
An uptight character
Camellia, The Belles. She was just incredibly selfish and kind of always thought that her way was the right way, even when it wasn’t.

Richard Gilmore
A character death you will never get over

Rufus and Mateo aren’t really dead right? Right?

Logan
A character who has gone through the most development
Adam from The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater. Seeing his character growth over the

Michel
A book with a character who has an accent
Life of Pi. I just remembered how stunning this book is. It was so beautifully written and so big yet small. Pi was such a great character and the

Christopher
A character who is part of a “Team” fandom Ex. Team Jacob or Team Edward
I guess Peeta. Although I have a lot of things to say about the whole ridiculousness of that ‘love triangle’. But let’s not go there for now and just leave it at Peeta.

Jackson
A loyal character
Bogdan, Conquerer’s Trilogy. My god The loyalty there. The way that whole story ended. It broke my damn heart.

Taylor
A character who always has something to say
There will be more on her later, but I feel like on some level Cassie from Frat Girl. Not in a bad way or anything, but she seems to always be prepared for what is thrown at her.

Kirk
A quirky character
I guess Cath from Fangirl would be considered quirky. But I kind of hate that word for a lot of reasons. So we’ll go with Cath. Also, curveball, Hermione.

Babette and Morey
A couple you couldn’t imagine not being together

Peter Kavinsky and Lara Jean. More on them later this week/next week. And also Ron and Hermione. I will fight people on that one.

And that is another tag done. Book reviews are back tomorrow!

Parentheses count: 2. See you tomorrow!

The Beauty and the Beast Tag

Hi, Hey, Hello!

Of course I come out of this A-Z Challenge with a tag post almost instantyl, it’s who I am. It’s what I do. And this one is to do with one of my fave films and so it was always a given that this was going to happen. So let’s get to it.(Oh and also, I saw this here)

Gaston

A Villain You Can’t Help but Love
I always seem to have a soft spot for villains. Not in a justified way but in a like, they always have better back stories to me and I just want to know more about how they got there. I saw Cursed Child last week and so I am currently all up in my Malfoy feelings, so let’s go with Draco.

A Book Everyone Loves But You Don’t

The Girl of Ink and Stars…

Belle and Adam

Your Favourite One True Pairing (OTP)

Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. No questions asked.

Belle

A Character Who is Destined for Greater Things

Mare Barrow. The place that she was left in was so open ended and she had the strength to do so much.

A Book You Bought for its Beautiful Cover That’s Just as Beautiful on the Inside Too

You know I was drawn all the way in by the Everless cover and well I’ve just finished it and damn was that book a piece of art that I am excited to read a sequel for.

Lefou

A Loyal Sidekick You Can’t Help but Love More Than Their Counterpart
Ron fucking Weasley. Honestly, I love him so much. Don’t get me wrong I love Harry and Hermione, but there is just something really special about Ron. I will defend him for forever. (I did not mean to mention them twice, but here we are)

Mrs. Pots, Chip, Lumiere, and Cogsworth

A Book That Helped You Through a Difficult Time or Really Taught You Something

Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People about Race really finally meant that I stopped giving a shit about worrying about being ‘too black’ or ‘too white’. It helped me come to terms with the minor clusterfuck that is being mixed race. I’m both. I’m not ashamed of it and other people’s issues with it is not my fucking problem anymore.

Be Our Guest

A Book That Made You Hungry
Eat, Pray, Love especially when she was in Italy.

A Fictional Character You’d Love to Have Over for Dinner

There are so many. Weirdly right now, it’s Offred. That level of pent up rage and living in that world. I wanna hear shit about it.

Beauty and the Beast

Opposites Attract

Like Mare and Cal…although actually they probably aren’t total opposites. They’re just opposite enough I guess.

Something There

A Character Who is More Than They Appear
It threw me how much I gave a shit about Evangeline in the end when it came to the Red Queen series.

A Book or Series That You Weren’t Into at First but Picked Up Towards the End
It’s no secret how I feel about Cassandra Clare’s work. I just about tolerated The Mortal Instruments and as such was hella annoyed at my lack of impulse control that meant that I had to read The Infernal Devices and I turned out to not hate it as much as I thought it would. I mean I still don’t think it was great. But it wasn’t as shit as The Mortal Instruments and I was surprised that it was written by the same person.

Kill the Beast

A Book You Picked Up Because of the Hype
Honestly, I picked up Fangirl because of the hype and did not regret it for a second.

Tale as Old as Time

A Popular Theme, Trope, or Setting You Will Never Get Tired of Reading
I will honestly never get bored of reading about people who ‘shouldn’t’ be together fall in love. You know like princes and ‘common folk’, or a football player and a nerd. That kind of shit.

A Book or Moment That Always Makes You Cry

I don’t really cry at books, and as such I cannot think of a single moment in a book that has made me do that recently.

And that’s it. Done. Turns out I’m thinking about the Red Queen series a lot right now still.

“My Blog’s Name in Books” Book Tag

Hi, Hey, Hello!

So I have reached a kind of stalemate with myself in that for some reason I am yet again finding it really hard to get book reviews out of my head and onto the page. And then also I got halfway through one only to discover that it didn’t save and so most of it is now gone and I am protesting against it momentarily. Also, I have a reviewed currently scheduled for a book that I am still reading and so I am also trying to bide myself some time. The Red Queen series reviews are acoming though, I’ve gone all the way in.

In the meantime I am doing another tag post because they are my break glass for emergency. I feel like this one is just going to highlight to me all the books that I have told myself I will read and yet show no signs of actually reading. Also why is my blog name so damn long? And why does it have so many bloody ‘f’s in it??

RULES:

1.  Spell out your blog’s name. (this is where you wish your blog’s name was shorter LOL)

2. Find a book from your TBR that begins with each letter. (Note you cannot ADD to your TBR to complete this challenge – the books must already be on your Goodread’s TBR)

3. Have fun!

T – Throne of Glass, Sarah J Maas – Lucky for me this is actually on my list for this year

13519397
Throne of Glass

H – Hunger, Roxane Gay – Also handy, because this is also on the list

22813605
Hunger

E – Everless, Sara Holland – Also on my list for this year

37883497
Everless

G – Grief is the Thing With Feathers, Max Porter – I forgot this was even on the list, I thought I was gonna struggle with this letter, turns out that is not the case

25334576
Grief is The Thing With Feathers

I – Inkheart, Cornelia Funke – I think I started reading this book when I was in school, but clearly do not remember and so it seems like a safe bet to have this be on a to read list.

Inkheart (Inkworld, #1)
Inkheart

R – Renegades, Marissa Meyer – I need to finish The Lunar Chronicles first, but I liked her style of writing and so I feel like I might like this one too.

28421168
Renegdes

A – Ash Princess, Laura Sebastian – I am currently reading the Red Queen series, as I mentioned above, and all of the covers have a crown and some blood dripping down it, I’ve lived with nothing but this image all month, I am clearly having a moment with fancy crowns on book covers.

Ash Princess
Ash Princess

F – Fight Club, Chuck Palahniuk – This is also on my list for this year, so that’s handy

Fight Club
Fight Club

F – Fever Pitch, Nick Hornby – Who knows when I put this on my to read list, I read one book by Hornby once and apparently thought I was going to make it a thing I guess…?

4264
Fever Pitch

E – Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine, Gail Honeyman – This is for sure on my list because it is literally everywhere whenever I go into a Waterstones and the power of suggestion is real.

35274766
Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fineela

F – False Hearts, Laura Lam – I had no idea this was on the list, my interest has just been been piqued again.

22816079
False Hearts

I – If I Stay, Gayle Forman – For some reason I thought I had already read this, but given that it is still on this list I’m guessing I haven’t

4374400
If I Stay

L – Life After Life, Kate Atkinson – I don’t think I have read anything by Atkinson, but there are a lot of books by her on my list. This being one of them.

15790842
Life After Life

E – Exit Here, Jason Myers – I have no idea what this book is about or how it got here. But here it is.

1240370
Exit Here

S – Someday, Someday, Maybe, Lauren Graham – I actually remember putting this book on my list because it’s written by Lauren Graham and I love her.

16071745
Someday, Someday, Maybe

And that’s another book tag done.

The Goodreads Book Tag

Hi, Hey, Hello!

Oh what a surprise, another book tag. This one I saw on Liam’s blog yesterday and well I didn’t have a plan for today and so here we are.

What was the last book you marked as ‘read’?

I’m writing this on Thursday and on a day when I am nearing the end of a book, but as it has not yet been finished I can’t quite say that it’s been marked as read, so in that case the answer is The Girl of Ink and Stars and I attempted to make sense of my thoughts on it here.

What are you currently reading?

The book that I am almost finished is All That She Can See. The review is coming, I am just as confused as I was with the last book I read.

What book do you plan to read next?

Currently I’m thinking Postcards From the Edge. Or it might be Eat, Pray, Love. I have 3 books left on this post to read and am currently looking mostly on track to succeed with that. It’s most likely to be Postcards just because of the length and the fact that I can probably get it done in a couple of days (hopefully)

Do you use the star rating system?

I do, just to give myself a general idea of where I stand with it when I come to actually writing up the reviews

Are you doing a 2018 Reading Challenge?

I am, it’s set at 65 currently, but as I mentioned here I’m kind of going for 70.

Do you have a wishlist?

No.

What book do you plan to buy next?

I’m trying to minimize the amount of books I buy right now. I did just buy two at the weekend (for a fiver in the end, which is kind of why I did it. I had an itch to scratch and I managed to do that and save £11 in the process which made it feel a little better) and so am trying to not buy anymore. There’s some pre-orders I have but I don’t really remember but I imagine I will get a dispatch email letting me know that I have a new one on the way I just don’t know when that will be.

Do you have any favorite quotes? Share a few.

I have so many. None that are saved on Goodreads or anything because I forget that is a feature on there.

But I’m only going to put one here from one of my always recommend books, The Night Circus (because it is just one the most stunningly written books that I have ever read)

‘You may tell a tale that takes up residence in someone’s soul, becomes their blood and self and purpose. That tale will move them and drive them and who knows that they might do because of it, because of your words. That is your role, your gift.’

Who are your favorite authors?

I have a lot. Obviously, Neil Gaiman. Donna Tartt. Samantha Shannon and Alwyn Hamilton are up there. Erin Morgenstern (yes, on the back off one book alone). I’m loving Kiersten White and her world building. Carrie Fisher has a brilliant way with words. I actually not necessarily hate Hemingway. Like I said there are a lot, I could go on.

Have you joined any groups?

I don’t think so (also didn’t bother to check whether I had). I don’t really utilize the site the way that I can to be honest. I just track my books with it.

The 90s Kids Book Tag

Hi, Hey, Hello!

You know how much I love me a tag post, especially when they also involve books and this one is based on the 90s. I was born in the 90s and was 7 when it ended so you know I was kind of a 90s kid.

Oh, I came across this on Tabby’s blog.

THE RULES

  1. Please, please, please steal this tag and spread it around! I only ask that you link it back to The Literary Phoenix so that I can see everyone’s answers!
  2. Freeze tag was all the rage in the 90s. Tag someone (or many) you think would have fun with this!
  3. Have fun!

POKEMON

A GBA GAME AND TRADING CARD GAME WHERE YOU BATTLED POCKET MONSTERS AND STRIVED TO CATCH THEM ALL. BACK IN THE DAY, THERE WERE ONLY 150 POKEMON.

THE AUTHOR YOU NEED EVERY BOOK FROM.

Neil. Gaiman. I’m making kind of good progress with this to be fair, but there are still so many books.

AIM

AOL INSTANT MESSAGING – HOW 90S KIDS COMMUNICATED WITH THEIR FRIENDS AFTER SCHOOL BEFORE EVERYONE HAD A CELL PHONE.

BOOK THAT CONNECTED YOU WITH YOUR BEST FRIEND.

Will this come as a surprise if I tell you that it’s Harry Potter. There’s a whole story about that.

FURBY

CREEPY NEEDY ROBOTS YOU COULD TEACH TO TALK AND WERE PROBABLY DEMON POSSESSED. SOMEHOW THESE MADE A COMEBACK?

BOOK THAT SEEMED LIKE A GOOD IDEA BUT WAS ACTUALLY A MONSTER.

There are so many though.

N’SYNC

90S QUINTESSENTIAL BOY BAND. YOU MAY HAVE HEARD OF JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE?

A BOOK YOU HATED TO SAY BYE, BYE, BYE TO.

There are so many books. Most recently it’s the Rebel of the Sands trilogy. I am so excited that I still have some short stories from this world left to read so I haven’t said goodbye to it completely.

SLIMED!

GETTING GREEN SLIME THROWN ON YOU, COURTESY OF THE SHOW FIGURE IT OUT. ALSO APPARENTLY STILL A THING AT THE KID’S CHOICE AWARDS?

A BOOK EVERYONE LOVED BUT YOU HATED.

Like the whole of The Mortal Instruments… I mean I read it but I hated it pretty much the entire time. I do not understand the hype.

OREGON TRAIL

90S COMPUTER GAME YOU COULD USUALLY PLAY AT SCHOOL, WHICH WAS GREAT. IT TAUGHT US PEOPLE USED TO DIE A LOT OF GRUESOME, MESSY DEATHS.

A BOOK THAT MADE YOU WISH YOU DIED OF DYSENTERY.

Such drama. I don’t hate any book that much.

MIXTAPE/CD

BACK BEFORE EVERYONE HAD MUSIC ON THEIR PHONES (REMEMBER, WE DIDN’T HAVE CELL PHONES!) FOLKS WOULD RIP THEIR CDS AND MAKE MIXES FOR EACH OTHER.

3 BOOKS YOU RECOMMEND TO ANYONE, ANYWHERE, NO MATTER WHAT.

I did a whole damn post about the books that I will always recommend, so here are the usual suspects, The Night CircusThe Secret History, American Gods.

DIAL-UP INTERNET

YOU KNOW HOW IT’S ANNOYING WHEN YOU AREN’T ON LTE? IMAGINE WAITING 10 MINUTES FOR THE INTERNET TO START AND ANOTHER 20 MINUTES FOR GOOGLE TO LOAD!

A BOOK THAT TOOK FOR FREAKING EVER TO READ.

I’ve been trying to read Moby Dick from start to finish since 2014. So there you go.

KENAN THOMPSON

HE’S THAT GUY WHO’S BEEN ON SNL FOREVER. ALSO MIGHTY DUCKS. GOOD BURGER. KEENAN AND KEL. ALL THAT. EVERYTHING.

THAT BOOK YOU SEE REFERENCED EVERYWHERE AND IS IN EVERYTHING, BUT THAT’S OKAY BECAUSE IT’S AWESOME.

Harry Potter. Of course.

THUMBS UP, SEVEN UP

A GAME WHERE MOST THE CLASS CLOSED THEIR EYES AND SEVEN PEOPLE TAPPED SOMEONE’S THUMB AND YOU HAD TO GUESS WHO DID IT WITHOUT PEEKING.

BOOK WHERE YOU PEEKED JUST REAL QUICK AT THE ENDING BECAUSE YOU DON’T LIKE GUESSING GAMES.

Oh, I don’t do this. I like the guessing game. What’s the point.

DUNKAROOS

THESE WERE BASICALLY JUST TEDDY GRAHAMS DIPPED IN FROSTING, WHICH IS STILL A WONDERFUL SNACK IDEA.

YOUR IDEAL BOOKISH SNACK

I don’t tend to eat when I read because I do it when I’m on trains for the most part and that’s not when I also eat.

SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK

COLLECTIONS OF SHORT STORIES THAT WOULD SCARE ANY SENSIBLE KID! PLUS, THERE WERE ILLUSTRATIONS…

A BOOK THAT KEPT YOU UP ALL NIGHT.

There are none.

BILL NYE THE SCIENCE GUY

BASICALLY THE COOLEST THING YOU GOT TO DO IN SCIENCE CLASS WAS WATCH BILL NYE. HE HAS A NETFLIX SHOW AGAIN!

A BOOK THAT TAUGHT YOU SOMETHING NEW.

It’s not so much that they’ve taught me anything new or anything, but there are definitely some things that I’ve been reminded me about some things, like Big Magic. However I do feel like I might learn some things from a lot of the non-fiction books that I have slated to read this year and upcoming in the next few weeks.

And that’s yet another book tag done on this here blog. There’s another book review coming tomorrow because I’m still just moving through these books at quite a pace. Also, I have like 4 books to read over the next few weeks of February that I had listed earlier in the year.

Parentheses count: 0. See you tomorrow!

Reading Resolutions Tag

Hi, Hey, Hello!

Part of me feels like it is going against the grain to do something with the word resolutions in the title when we are now finally out of the first month of the year, but here we are, it’s a tag post. I like books. I like reading. This is where we are.

Welcome to February.

(Oh also, I saw this post over here)

1. An author you’d like to read (that you’ve never read before).

Alwyn Hamilton was one, but I’m reading her books now. Victoria Aveyard’s is also someone’s books that I’m excited to read. And just because of the continual hype Sarah J Maas.

2. A book you’d like to read.

Ummmmm, every book on my reading list this year.

3. A classic you’d like to read.

Sense and Sensibility Jane Austen is (I think) the only classic I have scheduled to read this year.

4. A book you’d like to re-read.

I am not big on re-reading just because I always start thinking about the new books I could be reading, but there is a part of me that is really itching to re-read both Pride and Prejudice and also Philosopher’s Stone.

5. A book you’ve had for ages and want to read.

Again, there are so many. I’m slowly making my way through them. I actually cannot remember when most of my books actually entered my life and therefore I cannot provide an accurate answer.

6. A big book you’d like to read.

IT, Stephen King. It stresses me out how big it is whenever I see it on a bookshelf.

7. An author you’ve previously read and want to read more of.

I will not rest until I have read all of Neil Gaiman’s bibliography.

8. A book you got for Christmas and would like to read.

I didn’t get any books for Christmas that I didn’t buy myself. I guess the ones that I got closest to that period of time would be The Belles which has just entered my life and I am excited to get to it later this year.

9. A series you want to read from start to finish.

I am currently doing that with Rebel in the Sands but also The Red Queen series.

10. A series you want to finish that you’ve already started.

Almost all of them. I have started so many series’ in my time. The Lunar Chronicles is the one that comes to mind the quickest. It’s been over 2 years since I read the first one.

11. Do you set reading goals? If so, how many books do you want to read in 2018?

I do set reading goals. Or at least I have started doing so over the past couple of years just because it helps to focus me a little bit more in terms of reading and not getting overwhelmed by choices.

12. Any other reading goals?

Not really. I mean read more things outside of fiction, which I can actually achieve this year as there are a lot of non-fiction books on my list which is the most I’ve read in a while.
